Designing a Functional and Aesthetic Chair

Exploring the Intersection of Form, Function, and Material in Industrial Design

Inspired by the elegant curvature of the rooflines at Gyeongbokgung Palace, this chair design seeks to blend traditional Korean architectural beauty with modern industrial craftsmanship.

Process

Starting with detailed Maya drawings, I translated the conceptual design into precise digital models. These served as blueprints for woodworking, where I applied traditional joinery techniques and careful craftsmanship to bring the design to life. Throughout, I focused on maintaining the balance between aesthetic curves inspired by Gyeongbokgung and the structural integrity needed for functionality.

Final Product

The seat was elegantly crafted using two smooth curves, creating a comfortable and refined sitting surface. The legs consist of two rectangular forms, visually grounded and minimalistic. Between them, a triangular structure connects the elements, adding a modern and woven-like aesthetic. The soft curves of the seat contrast with the bold straight lines of the legs and the wood joints, creating a balanced symmetry. Ultimately, this piece embodies cultural heritage by reflecting the architectural essence of Korea’s traditional palaces in a contemporary design.

Instructor Feedback

The stool presents a clean and simple appearance, yet reveals a sophisticated complexity through its precise box joints and carefully crafted kerf cuts. This ambitious design process offered valuable hands-on experience with advanced woodworking techniques and equipment. The final construction is both sturdy and elegant, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. Suggestions for improvement include additional sanding and applying a natural finish, such as beeswax or polyurethane, to enhance the warmth and glow of the wood. The thoughtful, methodical approach taken to realize this vision is commendable. Improved photography would further highlight the stool’s full form and detail.
